The state legislature is making several decisions in the upcoming final weeks of the legislative calendar. To ensure the community’s voice is heard and represented accurately, it is important to gather feedback on significant potential laws ranging from topics like data center water usage to corporations' use of customer service chatbots.

Bill Summaries
AB 1542 - CA Data Privacy Act – Closes a dangerous loophole in the California Consumer Privacy Act by banning businesses from the selling or sharing of sensitive personal information to a third party.
AB 1609 – Customer Service Chatbots – Requires large private businesses to make a good faith effort to provide customers with access to a human customer service agent within 15 minutes of a customer’s request during the business’ regular business hours.
AB 1709– Social Media Prohibitions for Minors - Prohibits social media accounts that use addictive feeds for youth under age 16 and creates an e-Safety Advisory Commission.
AB 1921 - Protect our Games Act– Requires companies selling server-connected video games to notify consumers before shutting down a game’s servers, rendering it inoperable, and provide either a means of accessing a playable offline version of the game or a full refund to those who purchased it.
AB 1979 – Healthcare and AI - Requires a health facility, clinic, physician's office, or office of a group practice to ensure that no clinical decision is based solely on the output of an AI powered clinical decision support system.
AB 2469 – Data Center Water Usage - Prohibits a local agency from approving construction of a data center unless they provide the local agency with information regarding the data center′s water use, workforce, and infrastructure requirements for the data center.
SB 868 – Plug In/ Balcony Solar - Authorizes renters and homeowners to install plug-in solar (also known as “balcony solar”) to lower energy costs.
SB 947 - Employment Automated Decision Systems - Prohibits the use of automated decision-making systems for discipline or termination decisions in employment.
SB 1004 – Law Enforcement Face Coverings - Extends existing law enforcement agency requirements regarding facial coverings to statewide law enforcement agencies and peace officers.
SB 1013 – Automated License Plate Readers - Establishes safeguards regarding the use of automated license plate readers data and prohibits information collected on these systems from being retained by public agencies for longer than 30 days.
SB 1130 – Wearables Invasion of Privacy – Makes it illegal to operate a wearable recording device to capture sound or video of any other person in any area within a place of business where the person has a reasonable expectation of privacy.
